Tech Product Design for Pharmaceutical Labs
Client: Apprentice
Year: 2020
Our Role: Industrial Design, Prototyping, Product Development & Production, User Experience
Leadoff Studio collaborated with Apprentice to help increase the frequency in which their clients used Apprentice's augmented reality software by providing their clients easy access to the A/R headsets.
Leadoff Studio designed the Tandem Hub to mount inside pharmaceutical clean rooms, and hold the headsets pre-loaded with Apprentice's A/R software. Any lab employee in the clean room can approach the kiosk to log in, automatically linking their account to one of the headsets.
Apprentice Augmented Reality software is used in manufacturing clean rooms that produce pharmaceuticals. Their digital products are used to minimize errors and enable remote collaboration in production facilities working on COVID-19 vaccines and various cancer treatments.
Approachable Design
The Tandem Hub holds 4 headsets preloaded with Apprentice's Tandem software. The headsets are held out on an angled shelf, presenting themselves to the lab workers with an outstretched arm. The top shelf is transparent acrylic to create a sense of openness, cleanliness, and to provide visibility to the headsets on the bottom shelf.
The headsets are hung in place by a cylindrical peg. In order to keep the headsets fully charged, each peg has a charging cable pulled through it. The cable is positioned so the user easily sees it, so they are reminded to plug in when they take off the headset. The headset automatically logs out of their account once plugged in.
Material Design Aesthetic
Leadoff Studio designed the Tandem Hub so the entire kiosk could be cleaned regularly by a power washed chemical bath that is typical of the cleanrooms, allowing for the liquid to run through or run off all of the parts. All graphics are laser etched to the backside of the acrylic, so the front side remains completely smooth and easy to wipe down. All of the materials used were pre-approved for use in the cleanrooms, and the design is optimized for small or large scale manufacturing.
The overall industrial design fits in the cleanroom while the details help it stand out. Leadoff Studio sourced polished screws, and designed the other small metal parts to be polished so they would pop off of the matte stainless steel backplate. These details are used to draw attention to the device inside the cleanroom, to remind the lab technicians to access and utilize the headsets and software.
