Our Role: Industrial Design, Design for Manufacture, Product Development
Leadoff Studio led the industrial design for the Butterfly Cart for High Art, a New York City based art handling company that specializes in moving expensive and often uniquely shaped items around the tri-state area. The Butterfly Cart is an A-frame cart with a hinge mechanism in its base that allows the entire device to fold up flat.

COLLAPSIBLE DESIGN
High Art found that the A-frame carts typically used for art handling were not working for them, the carts were taking up valuable space in their trucks during jobs, and were difficult to efficiently store during or after jobs. High Art came up with a prototype design to support their needs, while Leadoff Studio worked closely with High Art to help refine and turn the prototype into an actual product. The Butterfly Cart is a patented design.
ERGONOMIC DESIGN
The Butterfly Cart utilizes a modular pocket system while incorporating multiple handles throughout the cart’s body, allowing users to easily and comfortably move the cart around. The additions of hidden handles and slots for straps were added to increase ease of use and ergonomic comfort.
DESIGN FOR MULTI-USE
In addition to the traditional uses of a moving cart, the Buttery Cart includes a compartment with a pegboard on one side and a flat table on the other when unfolded. This added workspace is useful for adding a writing surface to a space or helpful when contracts need to be signed on the job.
Similar to medical carts found in hospital settings, the Butterfly Cart is inspired by the cleanliness and ergonomics of these carts. A clean and refined design not only reflects the elevation of the high end art the cart is intended to transport, but also ensures that the cart can withstand use in more rugged situations.
With a nod towards the multi-use of medical carts, Leadoff Studios helped refine the Butterfly Cart so you don’t have to be a professional art handler to use it; it’s versatile in many situations and for many different professions.
